The area is dotted with important vestiges of Etruscan civilisation, including towns like Tarquinia, which has UNESCO heritage status thanks to its famous paintings on Etruscan tombs, Vulci, Tuscania, Cerveteri and Viterbo. It is also home to numerous villages and historic towns boasting entire medieval quarters, antique churches, castles, towers, monuments, Renaissance and Baroque palazzi, and famous gardens. The town of Bomarzo is known throughout the world for its garden full of sculptures of monsters, while Bagnaia, Viganello and Blera with the nearby Marturanum park, are equally compelling to visit. Also worth seeing is the ancient Roman theatre of Ferento, near Viterbo, and that of Sutri – which in Summer hosts shows that attract visitors from near and far.
